Since five full shows from this same engagement have been officially before, some sad and disappointed fans in various places are already whining things like, “If you’ve heard one of these shows, you’ve heard ’em all” and indicating that White Knight is hardly an essential release.

Nonsense.

White Knight will actually mark the first full release of a show that contributed songs to the original Elvis In Person (From Memphis To Vegas/From Vegas To Memphis) live compilation album. Plus, the songs “My Babe” and “Inherit The Wind” have never been featured on any full show release before.

The 1969 Vegas season represents Elvis at the top of his game. Whether first, sixth, or fifty-seventh, every 1969 (and 1970, for that matter) show is essential upon release from the vaults. How many of them do I want? All of them. (And I’m not a “buy every concert no matter what” collector, either. These shows are special.)

Also coming in February is a vinyl version of the recent How Great Thou Art classic albums release.

FTD releases are available from ShopElvis.com, Elvis Australia, and other online retailers.

January 10, 2011, Update: David at Elvis Australia has confirmed that the White Knight release will have a 7″ cover format, like the Classic Album series, rather than the more standard 5″ cover (“FTD will release Elvis : White Knight In Vegas August 26,1969 Las Vegas CD” — Elvis Australia). I love the 7″ covers, they remind me of the old 45 RPM days. Great idea, FTD!

January 15, 2011, Update #2: Not so fast on the 7″ release, it seems. FTD’s Roger Semon has informed Elvis Australia that they had to revert to the more typical 5″ release instead. “Please be advised that the forthcoming White Knight In Vegas will now be 5″ digi-pack with 12-page color booklet. We had intended to make this a special 7″ but due [to] technical reasons, it won’t be possible,” said Semon (“5 inch release for Elvis : White Knight In Vegas FTD CD” — Elvis Australia). While the upgraded packaging would have been nice, content is king.

  1. I totally agree, and having just bought myself the superb book “Elvis Vegas ’69” by Ken Sharp, I am currently really ‘into’ everything about that first season back on the Vegas stage. Sounds like the new FTD is a deluxe package too with an essay ad loads of photos. What a start to the new year! Happy new year to Mystery Train!
