New Superman film still on WB’s radar, to be shot in IMAX format

Those of us starved for another live-action Superman movie received yet another nugget of information this week. Sci Fi Wire reports that an IMAX/Warner Brothers press statement announcing the release of various IMAX movies between now and 2013 includes entries for both Superman and Batman 3.

From the press release:

IMAX Corporation and Warner Bros. Pictures, a unit of Time Warner Inc., announced today that they have completed an agreement to release up to 20 Warner Bros. films in IMAX’s format over the course of the next three and a half years (from 2010 through 2013). […]

Under the agreement, Warner Bros. movies that will be released in IMAX are: Legends of the Guardian: The Owls of Ga’Hoole 3D (September 24, 2010); Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1 (3D) (November 19, 2010); Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part II (3D) (July 15, 2011); Happy Feet 2 (3D) (November 18, 2011); and The Hobbit (December 2013).

Warner Bros. and IMAX also plan to release an additional 15 films over the course of 2011, 2012 and 2013, including Gravity, Dark Shadows, Fury Road, Batman 3, and Superman.

This seemed to mark the first official confirmation that new Superman and Batman movies are in development. February’s rumors around Superman movie details have yet to be confirmed or fully debunked, by the way.

While the value of IMAX is debatable in some theaters, it is great news that both Superman and Batman are on the horizon within the next three years.

With the twelfth Star Trek movie due in 2012, rumblings of Star Wars hitting Blu-ray in 2011, and now a new Superman movie flying into theaters by 2013, the next few years will be exciting indeed.
