Unfortunately, there is sad news in the Star Trek world. Majel Barrett-Roddenberry died today in Bel-Air, California. She was 76. The widow of Star Trek creator Gene Roddenberry, Majel was present on Star Trek from the very beginning.
In 1964, Majel appeared as “Number One,” a barrier-breaking role as the Enterprise‘s first officer, in the Star Trek pilot “The Cage.” On the 1966-1969 series, she portrayed Nurse Christine Chapel, who had a love for Mr. Spock that the Vulcan could never return.
On Star Trek: The Next Generation, she became known to a new set of fans as Lwaxana Troi, mother of Deanna Troi (Marina Sirtis). She also provided the voice of the computer on each Star Trek TV series and many of the movies, including next year’s Star Trek.
At her side when she passed away at home was her son, Eugene “Rod” Roddenberry, Jr.
Our condolences go out to her family and friends during this time. We will always remember.
