“Justice” will be served

Forget Heroes. Move aside X-Men. The greatest team of superheroes may someday be gracing movie screens. Variety reported yesterday that Warner Brothers has taken an early step towards a live-action Justice League movie by hiring Kiernan and Michele Mulroney to write the script.

DC Comics’ Justice League has taken many forms over the years, but key members generally have included Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Aquaman, The Flash, Green Lantern, and Martian Manhunter. There is no confirmation as of yet if “the big three” of Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman will have major roles or even appear in the proposed film at all.

A 1997 live-action television movie pilot for The Justice League of America did not involve the three legends but instead focused on The Flash, Green Lantern, Martian Manhunter, and lesser-knowns Atom, Fire, and Ice. The pilot failed to sell.

A popular Justice League cartoon series that did include the trinity ran from 2001 through 2006 (Justice League and Justice League Unlimited).

The 1973-1986 Super Friends cartoon was loosely based on the Justice League and included Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman as key members. Super Friends was recently named one of the top series in The Film Frontier’s Saturday Morning Cartoon Challenge.

The Dark Knight, the next installment in Warner Brothers’ newly revitalized Batman film franchise is set for release next year. Coming in 2009 is the tentatively titled The Man of Steel, the sequel to Superman Returns. A Wonder Woman movie project is also in the works, though a new director has not yet been named.

No other information has been set yet for the Justice League movie. Stay tuned.
