As The Dark Knight, the sequel to 2005’s Batman Begins, continues to move forward to meet its anticipated July 18, 2008, release, it does so without actress Katie Holmes.
Holmes played district attorney Rachel Dawes in Batman Begins. According to The Wall Street Journal, the actress will not appear in the new film. Her publicist claims that Holmes “was unable to accept the role because of scheduling conflicts.”
Directed by Christopher Nolan and starring Christian Bale, Batman Begins rebooted the Batman film franchise and became somewhat of a surprise hit, taking in $205 million in the US and $372 million overall. As a single film, Batman Begins made more money than all eleven of Katie Holmes other main movies combined.
As for Holmes not appearing in the sequel, her publicist also noted that “When she returns to work, she would like to tackle a new character.” She’s apparently eyeing a role in the low-budget Mad Money, starring Queen Latifah.
