Berman era ends for the “Star Trek” movies

The official Star Trek site, http://www.startrek.com/, confirmed on April 24 that J.J. Abrams (Lost, Alias, Mission: Impossible III) will write and produce the eleventh Star Trek movie and has the option to direct. The announcement seemed to mark the end of producer Rick Berman’s association with the Star Trek movie franchise.

Though Berman once steered the Star Trek: The Next Generation television series to a popularity that rivaled the eventual success of the original Star Trek, in recent years there were disappointing box office totals for 1998’s Star Trek: Insurrection and 2002’s Star Trek Nemesis along with low ratings for Star Trek: Voyager and Star Trek: Enterprise.

A release date has not yet been set for the eleventh Star Trek feature film.
