“Star Trek Nemesis” may have lost battle for number one

The Enterprise may have already lost her toughest battle. According to studio estimates released yesterday, Maid in Manhattan was the number one movie in the US over the weekend with $19 million. Star Trek Nemesis will apparently debut in the number two spot with $18.8 million.

If the estimates hold up, Nemesis would be the first of the ten Star Trek films not to claim the number one spot for opening weekend. Star Trek: Insurrection in 1998 opened at the number one spot with $22 million. However, the film went on to become one of the series’ biggest financial flops and made only $70 million in its entire run.

With the opening of the second installment of the Lord of the Rings trilogy this week, Nemesis may soon stand to lose further ground in the battle for the box office.
